David Sclar
David Sclar is a technology lawyer and the author of Workplace Strategies for Technology Lawyers: 36 Practical Tips on How to Communicate More Effectively, Work More Efficiently, and Give Better Advice as In-House Counsel at a Tech Company, a book offering real-world, practical tips for excelling as an in-house lawyer in the tech industry. His second book, 5 Reasons Why You May Not Want to Be an In-House Counsel (And 10 Strategies for Succeeding in the Role Anyway), provides insights on the tradeoffs of an in-house career path and strategies for success in the role.
Throughout his legal career, David has advised tech companies at various stages—from startups to established firms—collaborating closely with business leaders and their teams. His two books on in-house counsel careers stem from his years of experience, on-the-job learning, and his dedication to helping others succeed in the role.
David has served as the Healthcare Compliance and Privacy Officer at WW International (formerly Weight Watchers), where he contributed to WW’s tech-focused initiatives within its well-known weight loss program. Previously, he spent six years at Rally Health, where he joined the company as its second lawyer and Chief Privacy Officer. There, he supported the company’s rapid growth to “Unicorn” status and eventual acquisition by UnitedHealthcare.
David also has experience as outside counsel to tech companies through his work at BigLaw firms Ropes & Gray and Cooley.
He holds a bachelor’s and law degree from Harvard and has privacy and security certifications, including HCISPP, CIPP/US, and CIPP/C.
